History

(founded 1932)

The club was formed in 1932 as a Sunday team, although there was a Saturday team in the New Brompton League. The side were Champions of the Medway Sunday leagues senior section and winners of the senior and Kent Today Cup’s. They were also Kent Cup finalists.

The present day Saturday side began in 1992 playing under their sponsors name of Bond Sports for three seasons and picked up their first honours in the 1994/95 season winning the Faversham Charity Cup and finishing Runners up in Division Two East of the Kent County League to Royal George (Folkestone).

Now formally known by their present name they waited another season  before  wining promotion to Division One East by finishing Runners up to Rye United Reserves in the 1997/98 season. In their first season in Division One 1998/99 they finished Runners Up again, this time to Kennington who withdrew their application for premier division status due to not being able to carry out the ground improvements required, which led the way for the East to enter the elite division for the first time in their short history.

Due to their inclusion in the premier division for season 1999/00 the East entered a Reserve team into Two East of the County League to support their growth. It was a remarkable first season for both sides as the first team not only narrowly avoided relegation but won the  Inter –Regional Challenge Cup by beating Sevenoaks Town  1-0. The reserves reached the Eastern Junior Cup final and were only narrowly beaten 1-0 by New Romney Reserves.  The Inter-Regional cup win enabled the East to play in the pre season GR Roofing Trophy showpiece against Premier Division Champions Snodland who they beat 5-4 to lift the cup. The 2000/01 season saw them establish themselves as a premier division team and lift the Senior Les Leckie cup by beating Lydd Town in the final 3-2.

The 2002/03 season was by far the best in the clubs history, they  reached the final of the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield beating Danson Furness 3-2, they were Runners up to Stansfeld O & B club in the Inter-Regional Challenge Cup final only losing on penalties AET following a 2-2 draw. The Reserves also collected their first silverware winning the Eastern Junior Cup beating Kennington Reserves 3-0.

The 2003/04 season saw them compete in the Kent Senior Trophy for the first time, where they were drawn away to the Kent League and Cup Champions Cray Wanderers who at the time of playing them on 29th of Nov had not been beaten in any competition all season  (22  games). The East took a 1-0 lead and eventually lost 4-2, it was the first time Cray had trailed all season. The first Team also became the first ever Premier Division team to win the Kent County League Fair Play Award. This was also the Reserve Teams first season in the Rochester & District Premier Division having taken the decision to leave the County League due to the ever decreasing number of teams in the second division, the young group of players struggled to come to terms with the competitiveness of the new challenge and narrowly avoided relegation in their first season.

The 2004/05 season saw moderate success for both teams with the first team registering their best ever Premier division finish, level on points with Runners up Old Roan but a goal difference of four saw them finish third. The Reserve team reached the final of the Harry Rigden trophy where they lost narrowly 2-0 to league champions White Horse Borstal. They also won the Weald of Kent Charity Cup junior section by beating UK Paper 4-0.

The 2005/06 season again ended fruitless for the first team, but not through the lack of effort. As April approached they could look forward to three cup finals only missing out on a fourth by loosing in the Semi-Final of the Inter-Regional cup 4-3 at Norton Sports after leading 3-1. They were also still in the running for the league title but were very conscious of the fact that they were Ten games behind due to their great cup runs. First cup final was the Floodlit Cup played at Faversham Town against Bromley Green a tight game saw Green win 1-0. Next up was the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield played at Chatham Town against Hollands & Blair, again a 1-0 victory for Blair sealed their fate, but the manner in which the winning goal came could not have been more cruel, a 91st minute own goal. Lastly was the Weald of Kent Senior section cup played on Good Friday at Tenterden on a fabulous pitch far better than Chatham Towns Southern League surface. The opposition was again Bromley Green and this time the result a 3-1 loss. With the league still to play for a horrendous back log of fixtures saw the East play 3 or sometimes 4 games a week with only 2 or a maximum of 3 days between games. The dream finally ended with a 2-1 home defeat to Runners Up Faversham Town, the East’s third game in five days. Their final league position was again third as the season before, but they could lay claim to beating the champions Lewisham both home and away in the league.

The Reserve team again narrowly avoided relegation from the R & D premier division but also set a new club record by reaching the Quarter finals of the Kent Junior Group A cup.

We currently have youth teams playing at every age group up from U8’s to U16’s in the Medway News Youth League, plus the addition of Ladies football for the 2006/07 season. This will all help to ensure a successful future for the club.
